Blinded by the oversize headlights on the Silverado 3500, Trey shifted, then dived to the side, before he became part of the colossal push bumper. He scooted to his feet and turned as the truck skidded to a stop, inches from colliding with his patrol pickup. This guy was out of control.

He glanced over his shoulder.

Justine stood on the porch, watching.

“Get in the house.” Unable to view inside the cab, Trey approached with caution. “Driver, put your hands where I can see them.”

“I want out of this death trap!” a man bellowed. The passenger door flung wide, and a cowboy boot emerged.

“Slowly,” Trey demanded.

The sixtysomething man disembarked awkwardly, straightened his black Stetson, then tossed out a backpack. “Arrest him! That boy tried to kill me!”

“Driver, shut off the engine and climb down with your hands visible to me at all times.” Trey stood at a distance, maintaining visual on the driver and passenger.

“His name is Nathan Yancy. Just got his license, and his dad assured me he was capable. I saw my life flash before my eyes ten times in five miles!”

A nervous-looking teenager held up shaking hands, his body turned sideways to exit. “Sorry, sir. I’m not used to my dad’s pickup.” His voice quivered over the engine’s rumble.

“Don’t go blaming the truck, boy!” The passenger stormed toward Trey. “I’m Will Percy. I work for Justine.” He started for the porch, halted by Magnum’s growls. “You got another dog? What’s wrong with this one?”

“Nathan, turn off the engine and join me.” Trey kept one eye on Will. “Mr. Percy, that’s K-9 Magnum. Stay where you are and keep your hands visible at all times.”

“I ain’t no criminal!”

“Will’s my employee. Do what Trooper Jackson says,” Justine stated.

The willowy teenager killed the diesel and in almost slow motion jumped down, landing steadily on his cowboy boots, arms in the air, looking more of a gymnast than frenzied novice. He shifted from one foot to another.

Trey holstered his gun. “Relax and lower your arms. I need to see your driver’s license.”

The boy produced the identification with a shaky hand. “I gave Mr. Percy a ride—”

“You tried to kill me!”

Trey took the card and silenced Will with a look. “Hmm, got it today?”

“Yes, sir.” Nathan swallowed, bobbing his Adam’s apple, and nibbled on a nonexistent fingernail.

“Congratulations.” Trey handed back the card and lowered his voice. “The day I got my license, I sank my dad’s new truck, trying to impress a bunch of girls at the lake. Thought I could load the boat on the trailer by myself. Accidentally left the truck in Reverse. Went down faster than the Titanic.”

Nathan gasped. “Wow.” The boy’s cheeks flushed a bright red and his eyes were wide as dinner plates. “My dad woulda grounded me forever. Same as he’s gonna do when Mr. Percy tells him about tonight.”

“You’ll be fine. Just take it easy. You’re free to go.”

“Thank you.” Nathan nodded so vigorously Trey thought the kid’s head might bounce off his neck.

“He’s gonna kill someone!” Will used his Stetson to gesture at the pickup.
